In many instances horse trainers may train horses and provide riding instruction. These two processes are closely related for those who own their own horse and want to progress in as specific riding skill such as dressage.

Western Riding Uses Western Tack

Western oriented riding includes western dressage, western pleasure, trail riding, ranch riding, barrel racing, cutting, and reining. Rodeo riding is a specialized skill and usually learned from an early age through experience.

English Riding Uses English Tack

English riding encompasses dressage, horse jumping, and cross country riding. A horse trial including a combination of all three tests is called eventing. Dressage and horse show jumping are performed in an arena designed for just that activity.
